Shade Sails protect children from harsh uv rays of the sun - La Cantera Mall, San Antonio

Published November 10th, 2011 by Gwen Moodley

We all know what is it like trying to get our shopping done at the Mall and having our toddlers bored with nothing to entertain them.  La Cantera Mall in San Antonio has found a fun and pleasing way for parents to take a break and allow children to let off some steam with the enjoyment of a playground feature in the courtyard of the mall.  Beautiful shade sails adorn the multi-faceted playground feature allowing children and parents to be shaded from the hot sun.  Shade sails were installed on this playground to not only add protection from the sun but also create a festive and fun atmosphere to the play area.  For more information on shade sails visit our website www.shade4schools.com and find various sun protection devices to protect your children all year round.

Shade Structure

We recently installed a shade structure over the playground at the Lookout Canyon Recreation Center.  This structure covers two playground equipment structures using a 6 column Tandem single top extreme span shade structure.  The overall measurements are 37′ x 50′ with a 14′ entry height to ensure sufficient clearance in the center.  The resident children at Lookout Canyon are now able to fully enjoy their playground under cool shaded ambient shade.

Wide span awning over playground equipment

This wide span tensile shade structure has been used to cover outdoor playground equipment at this school yard.  Not only do the bright colors of the shade canopy enhance the beauty of the playground, but is vital protection for the children while at play outdoors.  It has become more common to find shade structures in school playgrounds today.  If your school is newly built, chances are that your playground lacks shade, and this would be an ideal solution for instant shade for a tree-barren play area.   Additionally, shade structures protect playground equipment allowing children to utilize cool equipment throughout the day.

A shade too short?

Taking the right measurements is vital and attention must be given to the shade structure entry height.  A recent case in point with the Dunham School was when the structure was ordered as a 30′x30′x9′ it was later realized that a 10′ entry height was required to clear the top of the playground equipment underneath the shade canopy.  We have made available a ‘Site measurement guide’ that details instructions on how to take the correct measurements for your shade structure.  Please contact us at info@shade4schools.com to request your site measurement guide.dunhamschoollouisiana.JPG
